Few things date people more than opening a conversation with the question, “What’s your sign?”. Of course, while the question is instantly
recognizable, the daily horoscope may be far less relevant in your life than you may at first believe. Astrology has been around for over 2,600 years and while its roots may come from astronomy, the science is far less exact.
How the Daily Horoscope Works
The horoscope is based on the constellations of stars that dominate the night sky. Over 2,600 years ago, astrologers would determine which constellation the Sun was traveling through on the day you were born and would make their predictions on the effects that they had on your daily life. The twelve Zodiac signs include the following.
- Aries
- Taurus
- Gemini
- Cancer
- Leo
- Virgo
- Libra
- Scorpio
- Sagittarius
- Capricorn
- Aquarius
- Pisces
The early astrologers made their calculations based on each constellation and today’s astrologers use the same formula. However, there has been a significant change over the past 2,600 years which makes the old information quite dated due to a phenomenon called precession.
What is Precession?
Basically, with the first day of spring or vernal equinox in the Northern hemisphere being considered the starting or zero point of the Zodiac, it originally was in Aries in 600 BCE. Aries is followed by Taurus and by Gemini and so forth for every 30 degrees from the elliptical. However, what they didn’t know in 600 BCE is that the Earth wobbles on its axis during its 25,800-year cycle.
The wobbling or precession which is caused by Earth’s interaction with the moon has changed the ecliptic point by roughly 36 degrees. In astrological terms, it has moved by about one month in the roughly 2,600 years since Aries was first marked as the starting point. This means that those who were born between March 21st and April 19th are no longer under the sign of Aries, but instead in the constellation of Pisces. Your daily horoscope is now one month off and has been so for your lifetime.

The Future of Horoscopes
So, your real sign is one month later than what you consider it to be now all because of a phenomenon that ancient astrologers were unaware of when they first made their calculations. So, your true daily horoscope has been one month down from where you were taught it was supposed to be. This news has created a considerable uproar in the astrology community and today millions of people who read their horoscopes are now wondering if that time could have been better spent reading something else.
While astrology has not been considered a part of the established scientific community for many years, the harmless nature of the daily horoscope has never been seen as anything more than way to pass the time or start up a conversation. Now, you have a new reason to ask somebody what is there sign because they might be wrong.
